The delivery of training within the CREST CAMP programme was officially launched on 20 January at Strathmore University in Kenya. This marks a significant milestone in advancing cyber security capacity building and knowledge sharing in the region. This important initiative is made possible through a partnership with Protection Group International (PGI) and NC4, with funding from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
CREST CAMP is designed to develop the capability, capacity and consistency of cyber security service providers in selected countries. It gives them access to mentorship from CREST member companies to help them develop the maturity and quality of their services in line with CREST’s internationally recognised standards.
It provides trainer training to selected educational institutions to enable them to teach official CREST training content aligned with CREST’s rigorous examination standards to selected staff from participating companies. The Kenyan element of the CREST CAMP training programme brings together a wealth of cyber security expertise under FCDO and NC4 guidance.
PGI provides trainer training using CREST’s official course material to Strathmore University which leads the delivery of the curriculum.
With PGI and CREST’s support, Strathmore University will deliver 4 weeks of training through January and February which will equip participants with practical tools, techniques, and knowledge to address emerging cyber threats and improve digital resilience.
As a result of CREST CAMP, Strathmore University and its instructors will be certified to teach courses aligned to CREST’s CPSA and CPTIA certifications.
PGI's Head of International Programmes Chris Sullivan said:
“Developing future proof skills to support a secure digital world is a vital element of achieving cyber security maturity. CREST CAMP is an important shift from government-focused capacity development toward building wider private sector & academic cyber capacity. We will help to achieve sustainable workforce planning and upskill and develop people to create strong cybersecurity ecosystems. We are proud to be working with CREST on the Cyber Accelerated Maturity Programme initiative because we are working towards the same goal.”
Commenting on the launch of the programme, Eng. Dr. Julius Bautime, Dean of Strathmore University said:
“Strathmore University’s School of Computing and Engineering Sciences, in partnership with the National Computer and Cybercrimes Coordination Committee (NC4), is proud to join the CREST Training of Trainers program to strengthen cybersecurity expertise in Kenya and Eastern Africa. CREST certification, a globally recognized standard, validates technical skills, ethical practices, and consistent quality in areas like penetration testing and incident response. This certification enhances career prospects, builds trust with stakeholders, and ensures professionals are equipped to address complex cyber threats.
By fostering a skilled cybersecurity workforce, this initiative supports secure digital transformation and safeguards critical infrastructure in the region.”
Sebastian Madden, Chief Product Officer at CREST, commented:
“The delivery of trainer training and the supply of official CREST training material to Strathmore University through the UK FCDO funded CREST CAMP in Kenya reflects our ongoing commitment to developing and supporting consistent and high-quality cyber security workforce development capability around the world through CREST’s global network of training partners. We believe that investing in local talent development can significantly improve cyber resilience in regions most at risk from digital threats. Partnerships like those that CREST CAMP is creating between international donors, national regulators, CREST member companies and training partners and local educators are key to ensuring that the best international practice is available affordably, locally.”
